Quality Putting Green Reel Mower for 1/5th the Price

Hudson Star Classic Greensmower

In the 14 years we have been in business, we regularly receive requests for the best home putting green reel mower. After looking at the few that are in the reasonable to low end of the market, we have finally bit the bullet and added greens-type reel mowers to our line. The Hudson Star Mower we added is the higher end manual push version, the Hudson Classic Cut. This is a really high quality machine, 11 blades, designed for longevity and ease of use. Others we looked at had hard to change mowing heights, were heavier, or felt cheap. Compared to other greens mowers that can cost $10,000 or more, this putting green reel mower is very affordable. Remember, standard home reel mowers do not cut low enough, and do not have enough blades to cut finely enough for a putting green.

The Classic-Cut Series:
The classic cut reel mower is designed to allow home greens owners to experience the same professional golf course quality greens care enjoyed by professionals. Due to its unique design and exacting manufactured standards, the Classic Cut Mower is used by golf course professionals to help solve those “difficult” mowing problems such as soft, sensitive, or newly seeded greens, inaccessible tees, restricted or hard to cut fringes, noise sensitive areas, or simply to obtain that “final touch” “manicured” look.

And a bit of care advice for your Bermuda grass lawn :
A reel mower is preferred for cutting Bermuda grass. This gives a cleaner cut, and these mowers can also be more accurately adjusted to low heights.  Grass clippings can be left on turf maintained with low to moderate fertility levels if mowed at the proper height and frequency. The clippings do not contribute to thatch, and they provide supplemental sources of nutrients. Remove the clippings only if the amount is so excessive that clumps form, or if appearance is important. Here is a very nice article on the care of Bermuda Grasses.

Best Practices When Using and Storing a Brill Battery

Charging Times: Charging time for the Brill Battery will vary depending on how depleted the battery pack is when you start to charge. The Brill charger is a simple transformer with a stated voltage output of 24V DC at 250 milliamperes (mA) current. Therefore a 2200mAh battery would take roughly 8.5 hours to fully charge if it were fully depleted when charging began. Similarly, a 3000mAh battery would take roughly 12 hours with similar conditions. Leaving the battery pack connected to the charger for a longer period of time won’t necessarily damage the pack if it is under 36-48 hours but they shouldn’t be left connected indefinitely either. Rebuilt batteries are Nickel Metal Hydride.

Full Depleted or Not: The Brill battery does not need to be fully depleted before charging but do keep in mind the charge time will be shorter and therefore should be connected to the charger for a shorter period of time. That being said it is a good idea to fully discharge then charge the Brill battery pack 3-4 times when first purchased. This will help achieve a full capacity for the pack.

On Memory: Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMh) battery packs do not suffer from “memory” effect like NiCd batteries do. Charging a NiMh pack at various stages of discharge will have no long term effect on the packs overall capacity. NiMh battery packs, similar to NiCd, are rated for 500-600 full discharge/charge cycles over their lifetime. In reality the number of cycles is longer since most packs are not fully discharged before being charged again.

Charge Every Two Months When Idle:
NiMh packs have a somewhat higher self-discharge rate than NiCd. Therefore it is good practice to charge an idle pack every two months or so. Storing the pack in a cold environment will help slow their discharge too.

Top 4 Push Reel Mowers

The Top Four: The top four push reel mowers are the Brill, Fiskars, NaturCut, and Silent Cut. One of these four will suit your mowing needs with a lawn of 10,000 square feet or less. The Brill mowers are the lightest and smallest mowers. The Fiskars Momentum weighs about 42 lbs but cuts right to the edge of the mower. The NaturCut are the second lightest mowers and cut from .6″ to 3.5″. The Silent Cut push reel mowers cut the best of all and weigh between 38 and 45 lbs depending on the model.

The Silent Cut Mower

Mowing Habits: Your mowing habits will determine which mower is best for you as well as the type of grass you have. For those mowing Bermuda or Zoysia, one of the Silent Cut models will work best for you. This is because it has six reel blades necessary for cutting Bermuda or Zoysia. If you will mow regularly when the grass reaches 3″ high, the Brills would be a good choice. Brill mowers can cut up to 1.8″. If you want to cut higher, the NaturCut offer a wide range of cutting heights. And the Fiskars does as well, cutting from 1″ to 4″.

Check These Out: So when you are considering a reel mower, check these four out. Happy reel mowing!

The Silent Cut Is The Mower For Institutions And Commercial Use

The Silent Cut has proven to be the best mower for institutions like schools, universities, and prisons. As more and more start-up green landscaping business get going, the Silent Cut tends to be the mower of choice as well. Recently we had a start-up green landscaping business look into ordering twenty Silent Cut Reel Mowers

The Silent Cut Mower

.

What makes the Silent Cut special is the mechanics of its wheel to blade configuration. It is a very detailed machine and often takes some tinkering to get it adjusted properly. Once it is adjusted it is a dream to use. Even though it is heavy, it seems to push more easily than any other mower I have tried, including the Brill, Fiskars, and NaturCut reel mowers. It is no wonder that this is the mower that is selected for commercial use.

Putting Away Your Brill Mower

As the season slowly turns to winter, yes, snowflakes fell in New England today, it is a great time to winterize your Brill mower. First of all make sure all bolts are fastened firmly. Then take a can of WD-40 and spray the blades. With a rag wipe the blades clean and if you have a can of silicone spray, spray the blades again. This will protect the blades from moisture.

Brill Razorcut Accu Electric Mower

Clean the wheels of debris on your Brill Mower. Take off the wheel clip and the wheel. Look at the gears. Often grass and dirt find their way into the gears. Clean and put wheel and wheel clip back into place. You’re done.

The Brill Battery and Brill Charger

Brill Batteries: We are very happy to say that we can rebuild Brill batteries better than when they were new. Our customers have been very pleased with the service.

Old Brill Batteries: If you have an old Brill Battery and do not want it, please contact us. We’ll buy it for $10 and have it rebuilt. Please let us know if you have a battery which we can buy.

Brill Chargers:
We can now say that we have a charger for the Brill battery which is better than the charger Brill sold. It charges more quickly and does not over heat.

There are two options when rebuilding your battery. We can rebuild the battery to 2.2 Ah which is exactly what you have. Or we can rebuild to 3.0 Ah which is 30% more powerful than what you have. These rebuilt batteries will last longer and charge more quickly.

My Son Matt and His Mower Choice

My Son Matt: My son Matt is 14 and has been helping me mow for the last few years. He started out having a small patch to mow. Next he mowed the whole front yard which is about 1/4 of an acre. And now he sometimes mows the whole lawn which is about 1/2 an acre.

Brill, NaturCut, and Fiskars: Matt started using the Brill, then chose the NaturCut, and then the Fiskar reel mower. He had difficulty with all three. The Brill was hard for him to push and couldn’t cut high grass. The NaturCut while it cut high grass was still a challenge for him to push through high grass. The Fiskars required maximum effort which meant he had to stop and rest.

The Silent Cut Mower

Mascot Silent Cut: This season we added the Mascot Silent Cut reel mower to our stable, and Matt has a new favorite. He just cut the back of our lawn in 25 minutes. It is about a 1/4 of an acre and the grass was quite high. Naturally, he is getting stronger but he is amazed at how quickly he can get the job done. Matt loves this Silent Cut push reel mower!

Removing E-Ring on Silent Cut Reel Mowers

From Time to Time: We are asked about removing the E-Ring on the Silent Cut Reel Mower. To do so, you need a pair of pliers. Pry the e-ring off horizontally by pushing away from the axle against the closed side of the e-ring using a standard flat head screw driver. Try putting a drop of oil or grease on it or spraying it with WD40 to make it easier. If you damage or lose the e-ring we will send you another one at no cost.

To Replace the E-Ring:

The Silent Cut Mower

Replace the e-ring on the Silent Cut Reel Mower by using a large pair of needle-nose pliers. Line the e-ring up in front of the groove. Open the pliers and place one side on the closed side of the e-ring and the other side of the pliers against the far side of the axle. Then close the pliers, snapping the e-ring into place in the groove. It may take a little practice but is fairly easy to do.
Let us know if you need more assistance.

Best, Lightest Push Reel Mower

Best, Lightest Push Reel Mower: We are often asked what is the best and lightest push reel  mower. Our answer has been the same for 15 years. It is the Brill Razorcut 38. The Brill Razorcut 38 weighs in at just under 17 pounds, making it the lightest mower available. The blades are flame hardened and are set to miss the bedknife by .05mm.

Brill Mowers: All Brill mowers come with a gap setting gauge. When your mower arrives you do not need to do anything but store the gauge with the manual. Each year before you begin mowing, use the gauge to reset the gap between the reel blades and the bedknife.

Brill Razorcut 33: Brill makes even a lighter mower with its Brill Razorcut 33. This mower is identical to the 38 but its blades are 33 cm. wide compared to the 38 cm. blades of the Razorcut 38. The Razorcut 33 weighs in at under 16 pounds.

Weight Debate: There is some debate on which is easier to use, a light or heavy mower. I have used both. The cutting experience is different. A heavier mower, like the Fiskars Momentum, is better for cutting grass which is high. A lighter mower, like the Brill or NaturCut, is easier to use for maintaining your lawn. All Mowers: All mowers mentioned in this blog offer a grass catcher.

Consumer Reports says Fiskars Momentum is a “Stand Out”

The Fiskar Momentum Mower: The Fiskars Momentum was recently given a very favorable review in the consumer reports!  Here are some excerpts from the article:

Benefits: Single-lever height adjustment and a design that throws clippings forward for finer cutting help the Fiskars(yes, the scissor folks) stand out.

Bottom Line: Choose the Fiskars if cleaner, quieter mowing is worth the lower cut quality we’ve found with manual reel mowers. And don’t let the grass get too long.

NaturCut Ideal Reel Mower Gets Great Customer Review!

Our NaturCut Ideal 40 got a great review which we wanted to share on our blog!

NaturCut Ideal 40 Reel Mower

Hi David,
I received my NaturCut Ideal 40 on Saturday and had to give it a try. After a fast 65 mile morning bike ride the legs were a little tired, but hey, I had a new toy that needed to be tried. This was going to be my worst case test. The temperature was in the low 90’s with humidity to match. Just another typical summer day in Georgia. I had not cut the bermuda grass since the last weekend and with a week of on again and off again rain had grown up to about 2.5-3 inches.

I just took the mower out of the box, put it and the grass catcher together and with no adjustments started cutting I also decided to go up and down the hill to add additional adventure to the afternoon. I was amazed at how easy it was to push. Even up the hill was not requiring the effort I was expecting. The grass catcher need some additional zip ties to make it work like I wanted, but that was the only thing that slowed me down. My 75 year old Yankee neighbor from across the street saw what was going on and had to come over and check it out. I knew he was just itching to give it a push, but I didn’t offer. There was only so much grass to cut and I wasn’t in a mood to share. I can tell you now that he will be borrowing it shortly. I just know Bob, he will have to give it a try. I give him until this weekend.

Any way the grass looked great. I could not call pushing the Ideal 40 work. I have done work several times in my life, this was not it. It will be even easier to cut the grass the next time. I also noticed that the reel mower did not lift up the bermuda runners and cut them off which is a good thing. Maybe now those couple of small bald spots will fill in. Oh yea, the neighbors will no longer know when it is Sunday afternoon because they will not hear my industrial grade Snapper. I have to ware ear plugs when using it.

Thanks again for answering all my questions over the past couple of weeks.

Fiskars Momentum Adding Grass Catcher Spring 2011

The Popular Fiskars Momentum Reel Mower: Fiskars Momentum  is adding a Grass Catcher this coming Spring. The 18″ reel mower which revolutionized reel mowing in 2010 will offer this grass catching feature. The Fiskars Momentum

Fiskar Momentum Reel Mower

was the best new mower in the reel mower line up last year.

Fiskars Momentum: The Momentum cuts from 1″ to 4″ and is easily adjustable. Because the wheels are in front and behind the cutting blades, the Momentum cuts right up to the edge, so there is not a cutting gap like most reel mowers. Because of its 18″ blades, the Momentum gets the job done quickly.

Don’t Hose Down Your Mower

Water and Mowers: Water and mowers are not a good mix. Whether your mower is a manual mower or a powered mower, water should not be used for cleaning. Just had an email from a customer who recently purchased a Brill Razorcut 38. She mentioned that she had just hosed down her mower.

Brill Razorcut

Silicone Spray and Mowers: Silicone Spray and mowers are a great mix. Before mowing, spray the blades with Silicone Spray. When you are done mowing wipe the blades clean with a rag. Spraying first, cleaning last, will keep your mower going strong for many years. Silicone Spray can be purchased at the hardware store, it is right next to the WD-40.

Is Henry Francis “mad” to be pushing a reel lawnmower?

If you tuned in to Mad Men on October 10, 2010, “Blowing Smoke”, you saw a sweaty Henry, Betty Draper’s new husband, doing some heavy breathing while mowing the lawn.  Advertising may not have changed much since the 1960’s but reel mowers have and in a good way.

Now much easier to push and lighter, reel mowers won’t wake up the neighbors or spew harmful pollutants into the air. Making the switch to a reel mower is easy.   A conventional gas powered lawn mower emits on average nearly 90 pounds of carbon dioxide and over 50 pounds of other pollutants into our air every year according to the EPA

This Season’s Brill Reel Mower Testimonials

We wanted to share with you all the great reviews that the Brill Razorcut has gotten over the last few years.  When the company was started about 15 years ago the Brill was the first product we sold and even after much expansion it is still one of our most reliable products.

Testimonials:

Hello. We just purchased a Brill 38 mower and wanted to tell you how pleased we are with it. It is a pleasure to use. Thank you for making such a quality item. It is too bad that the ease of use and quality of cut is not common knowledge. While using it I have had neighbours stop and give it a try, they are quite impressed. Thanks again -Dale

After much researching and thinking I decided to order a brill mower from your website. I was hesitant because my lawn is the perfect example of what not to mow with a reel mower. I previously had a cheap reel mower that worked well until the plastic parts wore. I decided to take the plunge and spend the money on the brill razor cut 38. It’s nothing short of amazing even in my stick ridden bumpy lawn. It took me a few tries to get the cutting bar adjusted but once I did the brill just plows through the yard and leaves it looking healthy and natural and ready to be enjoyed. -Cory

I found your website a week or so ago while looking for the best reel mower. Once I saw the Brill Razorcut 38 I knew it was for me. I ordered it on Saturday, and it arrived on Tuesday. I raced home and put it together and was outside cutting the grass in no time. In no time, the whole neighborhood was in my yard watching me cut the grass. I felt like a new father. Everyone wanted to see, touch, try my new baby. It performed even better than described on your web site. Easy to push, lightweight, perfect cut, and it took me less time to cut the grass than with my old polluting mower. I am 150% happy with my new Razorcut. I hope to increase your sales and have my neighbors converted before long!!! Thanks again… -Scott

Hello David, I must confirm that this mower is fabulous, even I after three disc surgeries can push it, the result is a clean cut, much better than with the usual mowers. You can read I am pretty enthusiastic about, and you can use this as an honest recommendation for this product. It is easy to use and to clean, I use a small broom and my hands to remove left grass. I would like to order a grass catche…thanks from a very satisfied customer. My friends are now interested in those mowers. Sincerely… -Barbara

-I have used US reel mowers for years. This Brill mower beats them all, hands down. Thank you for importing it. -James B.

I received my Brill push mower yesterday. I am mechanically challenged and I put this thing together in 10 minutes. I am proud to tell you that for the first time in my 53 years I cut my own grass. My yard looks wonderful, I got a good workout, and the mower was easy to push. I am ridiculously pleased with myself and your pro duct. I have also ordered a Tumbleweed composter. Thank you. I am saving more on yard maintenance thank the total cost of the mower. All of my friends want to come over and try out my mower. Expect an influx of orders from Nashville Tn. Thanks a million! -Elaine

Last night I got home late. It was after 10pm when I found my new people powered lawnmower on the porch. As my wife got ready for bed I quickly put it together, turned on the outside lights and mowed my yard! Twenty five minutes later I was done and I felt really really good. It was a very simple pleasure that I hadn’t enjoyed in over 4 years. Since graduating college and joining the service I’ve been stationed overseas. I’ve just been stationed in Richmond Virginia where we have bought our first house and now I’ve mowed my own yard! …and the neighbors had no idea. This mower is a solid and very efficient piece of equipment. It was a joy to use and I look forward to the grass growing again so I can back out there. Thank you….-Jason R

New Electric Riding Mower gets Great Customer Reviews

Hi all,

We are getting great feedback on our new 2010 Recharge Electric Riding Mower! Thought we would share this feedback with you here ::

I wanted to take a minute and expound upon my love for the Recharge Mower, a new green running lawnmower.

My family made the decision to become environmentally conscience about a year ago. It’s not always been the easiest thing but with a little research, we’ve had a lot of success. It was quite by accident that we stumbled across the Recharge Mower.

We’d made the decision to get a riding lawnmower due to some health issues and never really expected to come across anything green. Imagine our thrill when we found the Recharge Mower.

The Recharge Mower runs on battery power, so that means no motor. No motor, no emissions. The Recharge Mower runs for about 3 hours(that’s cutting time). In that time we can usually get our lawn done twice. The best part, it’s super cheap. For a full charge, our mower costs about 55 cents.

A green machine that’s cheap to run. Is there anything better?

More info on the Brill Sharpening Kit

New information:

We have some more information about the new Brill sharpening kit that we left out of our post yesterday and that we would like to share with you! Firstly, the sharpening kit is made for the Brill Razorcut 38 and the Accu Razorcut 38.  However this does not mean the kit cannot be used on the Razorcut 33.  The sharpening kit can be adapted to the Razorcut 33 by taking a hack saw and cutting the sharpener from 15″ down to 13″. The sharpener can also be used on the previous Luxus model of the Brill.  Also, please note that when putting the sharpener on the mower you must hand tighten the screws to the tight position and make sure to not use a screw driver because it will break the sharpener.

Sharpening Kit for Brill Lawn Mowers

We have just ordered new sharpening kits made especially for the Brill Mower that customers will be able to purchase on our website later this week.  The sharpening kit comes with instructions and three sharpening pads. The kit will cost $39.99 with an extra $10.00 for shipping and handling.

How it works:

-Attach sharpening kit to the mower.

-Push the mower around the driveway for about 5 minutes

-Hand tighten the kit again and push the mower around for another 5 minutes

-Repeat these steps 2 or 3 more times to sharpen blades completely.

Quick Fix for Bolt Coming Loose on your NaturCut Mower

Sometimes you will notice that the bolt attached to the handle will come loose on your NaturCut mower. Below are the steps for what to do when this happens.

-first you’ll want to start off by taking the cotter pan off of the handle and then removing the handle from the bolt.

-Remove the hub cap.

-Take off the wheel clip (you will need a flat edged screw driver to do this).

-Remove the wheel.

-Use a phillips head screw driver and tighten the screw.

-Put on the wheel, wheel clip, and hub cap. (To put the hup cap on press the middle so it snaps back into place).

-Place handle back over the bold and put the cotter pin back on.

And voila, no more loose bolts!

According to Customer, Ideal Works Great on Bermuda Grass!

The other day we received an e-mail from a customer about how thrilled he is with the way his Ideal 40 cuts Bermuda Grass. We thought we could share it with you.

Hey Dave,

Been a while since I happened to look at your web site and since I bought my Ideal 40. I happened to notice that the Ideal 40 is not recommended for Bermuda. Hmmm? It used to be. I have now been cutting my 7,000 square foot Southern Bermuda yard with the one I purchased from you two years ago.  The mower continues to work fantastic.

The neighbors continue to look at me like I have slipped a screw, but I can’t remember the last time I bought gas for a power mower, been two years at least.  Now that I think about it, I wonder if there is any gas in the old can in the basement?  The wife and dog still like to sit on the porch and watch me.  After two years, I still don’t consider cutting grass with the Ideal 40 work. I’ve done work, this ain’t it.

Anyway, take care, nice to see your company continue to do well and expand.
