Quality Putting Green Reel Mower for 1/5th the Price

Hudson Star Classic Greensmower

In the 14 years we have been in business, we regularly receive requests for the best home putting green reel mower. After looking at the few that are in the reasonable to low end of the market, we have finally bit the bullet and added greens-type reel mowers to our line. The Hudson Star Mower we added is the higher end manual push version, the Hudson Classic Cut. This is a really high quality machine, 11 blades, designed for longevity and ease of use. Others we looked at had hard to change mowing heights, were heavier, or felt cheap. Compared to other greens mowers that can cost $10,000 or more, this putting green reel mower is very affordable. Remember, standard home reel mowers do not cut low enough, and do not have enough blades to cut finely enough for a putting green.

The Classic-Cut Series:
The classic cut reel mower is designed to allow home greens owners to experience the same professional golf course quality greens care enjoyed by professionals. Due to its unique design and exacting manufactured standards, the Classic Cut Mower is used by golf course professionals to help solve those “difficult” mowing problems such as soft, sensitive, or newly seeded greens, inaccessible tees, restricted or hard to cut fringes, noise sensitive areas, or simply to obtain that “final touch” “manicured” look.

And a bit of care advice for your Bermuda grass lawn :
A reel mower is preferred for cutting Bermuda grass. This gives a cleaner cut, and these mowers can also be more accurately adjusted to low heights.  Grass clippings can be left on turf maintained with low to moderate fertility levels if mowed at the proper height and frequency. The clippings do not contribute to thatch, and they provide supplemental sources of nutrients. Remove the clippings only if the amount is so excessive that clumps form, or if appearance is important. Here is a very nice article on the care of Bermuda Grasses.

Best Practices When Using and Storing a Brill Battery

Charging Times: Charging time for the Brill Battery will vary depending on how depleted the battery pack is when you start to charge. The Brill charger is a simple transformer with a stated voltage output of 24V DC at 250 milliamperes (mA) current. Therefore a 2200mAh battery would take roughly 8.5 hours to fully charge if it were fully depleted when charging began. Similarly, a 3000mAh battery would take roughly 12 hours with similar conditions. Leaving the battery pack connected to the charger for a longer period of time won’t necessarily damage the pack if it is under 36-48 hours but they shouldn’t be left connected indefinitely either. Rebuilt batteries are Nickel Metal Hydride.

Full Depleted or Not: The Brill battery does not need to be fully depleted before charging but do keep in mind the charge time will be shorter and therefore should be connected to the charger for a shorter period of time. That being said it is a good idea to fully discharge then charge the Brill battery pack 3-4 times when first purchased. This will help achieve a full capacity for the pack.

On Memory: Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMh) battery packs do not suffer from “memory” effect like NiCd batteries do. Charging a NiMh pack at various stages of discharge will have no long term effect on the packs overall capacity. NiMh battery packs, similar to NiCd, are rated for 500-600 full discharge/charge cycles over their lifetime. In reality the number of cycles is longer since most packs are not fully discharged before being charged again.

Charge Every Two Months When Idle:
NiMh packs have a somewhat higher self-discharge rate than NiCd. Therefore it is good practice to charge an idle pack every two months or so. Storing the pack in a cold environment will help slow their discharge too.

Top 4 Push Reel Mowers

The Top Four: The top four push reel mowers are the Brill, Fiskars, NaturCut, and Silent Cut. One of these four will suit your mowing needs with a lawn of 10,000 square feet or less. The Brill mowers are the lightest and smallest mowers. The Fiskars Momentum weighs about 42 lbs but cuts right to the edge of the mower. The NaturCut are the second lightest mowers and cut from .6″ to 3.5″. The Silent Cut push reel mowers cut the best of all and weigh between 38 and 45 lbs depending on the model.

The Silent Cut Mower

Mowing Habits: Your mowing habits will determine which mower is best for you as well as the type of grass you have. For those mowing Bermuda or Zoysia, one of the Silent Cut models will work best for you. This is because it has six reel blades necessary for cutting Bermuda or Zoysia. If you will mow regularly when the grass reaches 3″ high, the Brills would be a good choice. Brill mowers can cut up to 1.8″. If you want to cut higher, the NaturCut offer a wide range of cutting heights. And the Fiskars does as well, cutting from 1″ to 4″.

The Silent Cut Is The Mower For Institutions And Commercial Use

The Silent Cut has proven to be the best mower for institutions like schools, universities, and prisons. As more and more start-up green landscaping business get going, the Silent Cut tends to be the mower of choice as well. Recently we had a start-up green landscaping business look into ordering twenty Silent Cut Reel Mowers

The Silent Cut Mower

.

What makes the Silent Cut special is the mechanics of its wheel to blade configuration. It is a very detailed machine and often takes some tinkering to get it adjusted properly. Once it is adjusted it is a dream to use. Even though it is heavy, it seems to push more easily than any other mower I have tried, including the Brill, Fiskars, and NaturCut reel mowers. It is no wonder that this is the mower that is selected for commercial use.
