Best Practices When Using and Storing a Brill Battery

Charging Times: Charging time for the Brill Battery will vary depending on how depleted the battery pack is when you start to charge. The Brill charger is a simple transformer with a stated voltage output of 24V DC at 250 milliamperes (mA) current. Therefore a 2200mAh battery would take roughly 8.5 hours to fully charge if it were fully depleted when charging began. Similarly, a 3000mAh battery would take roughly 12 hours with similar conditions. Leaving the battery pack connected to the charger for a longer period of time won’t necessarily damage the pack if it is under 36-48 hours but they shouldn’t be left connected indefinitely either. Rebuilt batteries are Nickel Metal Hydride.

Full Depleted or Not: The Brill battery does not need to be fully depleted before charging but do keep in mind the charge time will be shorter and therefore should be connected to the charger for a shorter period of time. That being said it is a good idea to fully discharge then charge the Brill battery pack 3-4 times when first purchased. This will help achieve a full capacity for the pack.

On Memory: Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMh) battery packs do not suffer from “memory” effect like NiCd batteries do. Charging a NiMh pack at various stages of discharge will have no long term effect on the packs overall capacity. NiMh battery packs, similar to NiCd, are rated for 500-600 full discharge/charge cycles over their lifetime. In reality the number of cycles is longer since most packs are not fully discharged before being charged again.

Charge Every Two Months When Idle:
NiMh packs have a somewhat higher self-discharge rate than NiCd. Therefore it is good practice to charge an idle pack every two months or so. Storing the pack in a cold environment will help slow their discharge too.

Brill Batteries and Chargers

Brill Batteries and Chargers: As many of you know, we are now rebuilding Brill Batteries. After being rebuilt, the batteries are better than they were when new! We can rebuild the batteries to 2.2 Ah which is what you have or to 3.0 Ah which is 30% more powerful than what you have.

Now Chargers: We can also make new chargers for you, which will charge your battery faster than the Brill charger which came with your battery.

To Order: You can make an order online at peoplepoweredmachines.com to have your battery rebuilt. We’ll process the order and send you the address to which you send your old Brill Battery. Or call 978 884 8156 to order a battery or charger.

Silent Cut Reel Mower Does a Great Job!

First Spin: I just took my Silent Cut 21″ reel mower out for its first job of mowing my 1/2 acre lawn. Wow, what a beautiful job the Silent Cut push reel mower did. Because its blades are 21″ wide it took quite a bit less time to do.

The Silent Cut Mower

Blade Adjustment: The blade adjustment is done using the elongated brass adjustment nut. You need to adjust the nut on both sides of the mower. Make sure to just adjust the brass piece with a wrench.

Easy to Push: With the weight of the mower I expected it to be difficult to push. But I was happily surprised that once you got the Silent Cut 21″ started it was fairly easy to push. This was the mower which I was recommending for mowing Bermuda and Zoysia grass. Now I’ll recommend it for all grasses.

Brill Rebuilt Batteries Are Popular

Rebuilding Brill Batteries: When we launched this program of rebuilding Brill Batteries we were not sure how popular it would be. These are the batteries used in Brill Accu 38 electric reel mowers, Brill ASM380 reel mowers, and Brill Accu Trimmers. But after two weeks, we can tell it is very popular. So keep those old Brill Batteries – they are worth something.

2.2 Ah or 3.0 Ah: The Brill Battery you have is a 2.2 Ah, and we can rebuild it so it is better than it was when new. Or we can rebuild it to 3.0 Ah which is 30% more powerful and runs 30% longer.

Remember: Don’t throw old Brill Batteries out! We can also rebuild other batteries, just not lithium ion ones.

Old Brill Batteries Are Worth $

Old Brill Batteries: Save your Brill Batteries – they are worth cash. Just contact us and we’ll tell you how. The Brill Batteries are used to power either the ASM380, the Accu Razorcut, or the Brill Trimmer. With our ability to rebuild Brill Batteries to be better than when new – your old batteries have just become valuable.

2.2 AH or 3.0 AH:
Brill Batteries can now be built to either 2.2 AH or 3.0 AH. The 2.2 AH is basically what you first received except our rebuilt are stronger and don’t take as long to recharge. The 3.0 AH is 30% stronger than the new Accu Battery and takes less time to recharge.

So if you have a Brill Battery: Let us know!

Brill and NaturCut Parts

Increase in Parts Orders: One thing we have noticed this year is the greater need for parts for Brill and NaturCut mowers. I’m not sure if it is related to the economy but many more requests for parts are coming in. It could be that folks have had their machines for such a long time that replacement parts are needed. Or it could be that people are in the fix-up mode rather than purchasing a new machine.

Diagram parts list RazorCut Premium 38-78371

Brill Parts: Above is a parts diagram for the Brill Razorcut 38. All the parts have numbers which we need to fulfill your order. We have parts for the Luxus 38, Luxus 33, Razorcut 38, and Razorcut 33. We can also rebuild Accu Batteries so that they are stronger than when new.

Rebuilding Depleted Brill Batteries

Rebuild Brill Batteries: We are very pleased to announce that we can now rebuild Brill Batteries that have lost their charge.

Two Recell Options: We offer two recell options for the 24V Brill packs. They are either our standard capacity 2.2Ah (or 2200mAh if you prefer) nickel-metal hydride (NiMh) cells or 3.0Ah NiMh cells. From what I can glean from the part number on the cells of the Brill pack we serviced last week the OE capacity is 2.0Ah via nickel-cadmium (NiCd) cells.

Two Services: Either one of our services would provide a run-time improvement over the OE pack. Additionally, since we recell the packs using NiMh cells they are more environmentally friendly to manufacture and do not suffer from charge memory effects that NiCd typically do.

The Cells: The cells we use are made to our specifications to be high-drain cells, meaning they are designed to take high loads for a sustained period of time (ours can take a sustained 10X cell capacity load). Basically this means the cells were made for a high-drain use in mind (ie. power tools or in your case lawn mowers which need peak torque output) and are not typical cells which would be used for low power electrical devices (cordless phones, etc.).

Supply of Brill Batteries: As the supply of Brill Batteries has run out, this is great news. Save those old Brill Batteries!

Fiskars Momentum – Blade Sharpening Tips

Fiskars Momentum – Blade sharpening:  Regarding sharpening the blades or the the Fiskars Momentum Push Reel Mower. With further investigation & testing, we are now reversing our opinion re: blade “sharpening”, saying “Fiskars does not recommend sharpening the Momentum™ reel mower. The equipment and processes used in home sharpening kits, and even by many professional sharpeners, will likely not be able to achieve the strict tolerances required to maintain the non-contact nature of the cutting system. In the unlikely event that the blades on a heavily used Momentum™ manual reel mower begin to show signs of dulling, Fiskars recommends backlapping to restore the blade edges.”  To “backlap” the Momentum™ reel mower, an abrasive lapping compound is applied to the blades with a brush and the reel is spun backwards via a special hand crank until the blades are smooth and sharpness is restored. While existing backlapping kits for reel mowers can be modified to work with Momentum™ push reel lawn mower, Fiskars is developing a custom kit that will be available in late 2011 or early 2012. The Fiskars kit will include a hand crank designed specifically for the Momentum™ mower, a lapping compound ideally suited for the Momentum™ mower’s blades, an application brush and clear, easily followed instructions.

Fiskar Momentum Reel Mower

Length of Time Before Sharpening: How long should the mower go before blades need to be sharpened on the Fiskars Momentum reel mower?  They can go years,  do to the non-contact blade system? Under normal usage the blades should remain sharp for the life of the mower.

To Get Better Traction a Brill Customer Studded hisTires

To Improve Traction: Here’s how I “studded” my Brill reel mower in order to get enough traction to mow my thick lawn.  I just used finishing nails.  It works great on my Brill push reel lawnmower.

Not Sure What Type of Grass: I don’t know what kind of grass I have.  However, there are several different varieties.  On my south lawn which gets plenty of sun the grass is so dense that I could hardly mow it with my push reel mower particularly when the wheels of my Brill reel mower were slipping even with the cutter depth set at 40 – 45mm. The tool-making part of my brain clicked in, and, voilá, “studs!”

The Silent Cut Mower

Grass Catchers for Brill Razorcut 38s and 33s

NaturCut Grass Catchers: Yesterday we wrote about how we thought the NaturCut Universal Grass Catcher would work on Brill Razorcut 38 Reel Lawn mowers. Our man tested the catchers yesterday and found that the NaturCut Grass Catcher works for both the Brill Razorcut 38 and the Brill Razorcut 33! Great news!

Brill Grass Catchers:The US supply of Brill Grass Catchers is running very low and will soon be depleted. We do not expect to have more Brill Grass Catchers this season. So having the NaturCut Grass Catcher fit and work well with the Brill mowers is wonderful news.

Brill Razorcut 38 Grass Catchers: We have just learned that the US supply of Grass Catchers for the Brill Razorcut 38 will soon run out. That would be a bummer especially with restocking forecasted as taking 6 months.

NaturCut Grass Catchers work with the Brill Razorcut 38: We have made some inquiries and believe that the NaturCut Grass Catcher will also work on the Brill Razorcut 38 Reel Mower. If this is true, this will be great news for the spring and summer seasons.

A Few Good Things to Know When Using A NaturCut Reel Mower

A Few Good Things to Know When Using a NaturCut Reel Mower:

Depending on the variety of grass and thickness of your lawn, your NaturCut Classic Reel Mower 0r Ideal reel mower may cut perfectly right out of the box. You can fine tune the cut to your lawn by spending less than 10 minutes adjusting the blade gap to enjoy a truly great cut and easy to push mower.

Our simple adjustment method is to turn the blade adjusting bolts clockwise until the bed knife blade just evenly touches the rotating blades. It is entirely possible that 1, 2 or even 3 blades might touch and the others might not- don’t worry about that. (This is, after all, a lawn mower and not a medical device)

NaturCut Ideal 40 Reel Mower

You can use your NaturCut mower with the blades in this ‘minimal-contact’ position in order to cut fine-bladed grass or lawns with dandelions. However, if the NaturCut Push Reel  Mower is hard to push, seizes up or leaves a ‘scalloped’ effect on the grass the gap is probably too tight for your variety of grass. You may then want to try to use the non-contact cutting adjustment.

To cut with the non-contact adjustment, turn the blade bolts equally counter-clockwise, in small increments of 1/8 turn, until the bed knife blade doesn’t touch the rotating blades. Before any further adjusting try cutting your lawn with the NaturCut Push Reel Lawnmower. The mower will probably cut just fine. As above, if the mower is hard to push, seizes up or leaves a ‘scalloped’ effect on the grass the gap is probably still too tight and will require a bit more adjustment. If the mower leaves uncut grass the gap is too wide. Also, once the gap is over about 1/10 mm you will find that the mower will bind with too much grass getting stuck, uncut, in the blade gap (like too many sheets of paper in a shredder). If you get too far out of adjustment it is easiest to start over by getting the blades to evenly touch again.

The trick here is to find the ‘sweet spot’ in the blade gap for your particular variety of grass and circumstance. Always adjust each bolt the same as the other to keep the blades parallel and don’t be a slave to the blade gap gauge that comes with your mower- that is a nominal preset only.

It takes so little time to properly adjust your NaturCut Classic or NaturCut Ideal Reel Mower that it is well worth the effort.

Silent Cut 18″ are in stock.

We are pleased that the Silent Cut 18″ is in stock. Both the regular 18″ and the Silent Cut 18″ with Large Wheels are in stock. We expect to have the 21″ models in both styles in stock the week of May 20, 2011.

Removing E-Ring on Silent Cut Reel Mowers

From Time to Time: We are asked about removing the E-Ring on the Silent Cut Reel Mower. To do so, you need a pair of pliers. Pry the e-ring off horizontally by pushing away from the axle against the closed side of the e-ring using a standard flat head screw driver. Try putting a drop of oil or grease on it or spraying it with WD40 to make it easier. If you damage or lose the e-ring we will send you another one at no cost.

To Replace the E-Ring:

The Silent Cut Mower

Replace the e-ring on the Silent Cut Reel Mower by using a large pair of needle-nose pliers. Line the e-ring up in front of the groove. Open the pliers and place one side on the closed side of the e-ring and the other side of the pliers against the far side of the axle. Then close the pliers, snapping the e-ring into place in the groove. It may take a little practice but is fairly easy to do.
Let us know if you need more assistance.

Best, Lightest Push Reel Mower

Best, Lightest Push Reel Mower: We are often asked what is the best and lightest push reel  mower. Our answer has been the same for 15 years. It is the Brill Razorcut 38. The Brill Razorcut 38 weighs in at just under 17 pounds, making it the lightest mower available. The blades are flame hardened and are set to miss the bedknife by .05mm.

Brill Mowers: All Brill mowers come with a gap setting gauge. When your mower arrives you do not need to do anything but store the gauge with the manual. Each year before you begin mowing, use the gauge to reset the gap between the reel blades and the bedknife.

Brill Razorcut 33: Brill makes even a lighter mower with its Brill Razorcut 33. This mower is identical to the 38 but its blades are 33 cm. wide compared to the 38 cm. blades of the Razorcut 38. The Razorcut 33 weighs in at under 16 pounds.

Weight Debate: There is some debate on which is easier to use, a light or heavy mower. I have used both. The cutting experience is different. A heavier mower, like the Fiskars Momentum, is better for cutting grass which is high. A lighter mower, like the Brill or NaturCut, is easier to use for maintaining your lawn. All Mowers: All mowers mentioned in this blog offer a grass catcher.

Tips for Tuning up Your Reel Mower

Spring is here: And it’s time to tune up your reel mower. First check to be sure all nuts are tight and that the handle is secure. Spray some silicone spray on the blades and wipe clean after spraying.

Blade Adjustment: Brill and NaturCut mowers use an adjustment gauge which sets the gap properly between the reel blades and bedknife. Turn the mower over and put the gauge between the reel blades and the bedknife on one side. With a 10 mm wrench gently tighten the nut about a 1/4 turn. Do the same to the other side. Blade should just barely miss the bedknife when it spins. If there is a slight contact that is fine.

The Silent Cut Mower

Silent Cut and Fiskars: Silent Cut mowers and Fiskars Momentum use a slightly different system. Consult the manual and follow the adjustment directions.

Silicone Spray: To take excellent care of your mower, we recommend spraying the blades with silicone spray before each mowing. And we recommend wiping the blades clean with a rag after each mowing. This keeps the mower clean and helps it run well longer.

Great new price on NaturCut Ideal Lawn Mower

New Price: People Powered Machines has lowered its price on the popular NaturCut Ideal Lawn Mower. This reel mower is now for sale at $185.00. If you have been sitting on the fence, this is a great time to buy.

NaturCut Ideal: The NaturCut Ideal cuts from .6″ to 2.75″ and mows a 16″ swath. It is powered with 10″ wheels and cuts with 5 flame hardened reel blades. The Ideal utilizes the non-contact cutting system which means the blades stay sharp much longer than mowers which use the contact cutting system. Estimated blade life for the Ideal is 8-10 years.

NaturCut Ideal 40

Two Year Warranty: The Ideal comes with a two year warranty and using a Grass Catcher is an option with this mower.

How to Compare Reel Mowers

New Reel Mowers: As the years have gone by the reel mower market has grown. In just the last year two very fine mowers have been added. The Fiskars Momentum and the NaturCut reel mowers are the new mowers.

Exceptional Reel Mowers: The Fiskars and NaturCut join the Brill and Silent Cut as our top reel mowers made today. The Silent Cut mowers come in four variations and are excellent at mowing Bermuda and Zoysia lawns. Brill, the best selling European mower, works well for small lawns which are not St. Augustine, Bermuda, or Zoysia.

Electric Reel Mowers: Cel Power makes the Cel PowerMow which is an electric reel mower. It is powered with a battery and can be used manually as well. Battery run time is between 45 minutes and an hour depending on density of the lawn.

To Compare: We offer a Comparison Chart for your use. It will tell you the number of blades, prices, warranty and lots of other important information.

Testimonial for the NaturCut Ideal 40

Mowing Report: After cutting the grass about 8 times with my Naturcut Ideal 40, I thought I would report back. The machine is still working great as expected. I have always cut the grass in a different direction each time and continue to do so as you instructed. The cleaning with a good silicon spray is also a good idea. I found Liquid Wrench makes a great silicon spray and is available at my local Advanced Auto Parts store. I’ll have to say I continue to prefer the sound of the Ideal over the snapper. Something about the sound of good machinery. The neighbors never know when I cut the grass. The yard continues to look great. I cut it about every 5-6 days, never on Tuesday or Thursday.

Exercise, One of My Goals: One of my reasons for purchasing a push reel mower was to get a little additional exercise each week. This past weekend I decided to run the numbers and see just how much exercise I was getting. As I stated in a previous email, I do a little bit of cycling. One thing I have appreciated is that cutting with the NaturCut Ideal 40 keeps my legs loosened up between bike rides. I monitor my bicycle rides with a heart rate monitor and while not an exact science, the monitoring does provide a good comparison from ride to ride to see how I am doing. For the record, I’m 54 years old and weigh around 152 lbs. On a Tuesday or Thursday night group ride I will typically burn between 900 and 1,200 calories on a 25 mile one hour and twenty minute ride, depending on who’s serving up the suffering.

NaturCut Ideal 40 Reel Mower

Now for my mowing experiment:
Here is the yard, front, back and some along the road at the top of the hill adds up to a little more than 7,000 square feet of grass. A typical late summer bermuda grass yard in need of one more bag of fertilizer.
Conditions: 89 degrees, 85% humidity.

Right tools for the right job: Road bike fresh off a 75 mile Saturday morning ride. The NaturCut Ideal 40 patiently waiting it’s turn.

Now the results:
Time spent cutting the grass at a relaxed pace: 45 minutes
Average heart rate: 130
Calories burned: 364
Calories burned per minute cutting grass: 8.1
Calories burned per minute riding bicycle on Tuesday or Thursday at around 1,000 calories for 80 min.: 12.5

Conclusion:
It looks like I play harder than I work. Don’t tell the wife, she thinks I’m suffering out in the heat cutting grass. She gets so much entertainment out of sitting on the porch under the fan with the dog watching me walk back in forth, I would hate to spoil it for her. They come out of the shade occasionally and wander out into the yard to visit me. I try to make it look like work.

Consumer Reports says Fiskars Momentum is a “Stand Out”

The Fiskar Momentum Mower: The Fiskars Momentum was recently given a very favorable review in the consumer reports!  Here are some excerpts from the article:

Benefits: Single-lever height adjustment and a design that throws clippings forward for finer cutting help the Fiskars(yes, the scissor folks) stand out.

Bottom Line: Choose the Fiskars if cleaner, quieter mowing is worth the lower cut quality we’ve found with manual reel mowers. And don’t let the grass get too long.

The Fiskar Mower: The Momentum was also tested and recommended by the National Home Gardening Club, which is a community of gardeners across the country with more than 600,00 paid members, and here are the results:

NaturCut Ideal Reel Mower Gets Great Customer Review!

Our NaturCut Ideal 40 got a great review which we wanted to share on our blog!

NaturCut Ideal 40 Reel Mower

Hi David,
I received my NaturCut Ideal 40 on Saturday and had to give it a try. After a fast 65 mile morning bike ride the legs were a little tired, but hey, I had a new toy that needed to be tried. This was going to be my worst case test. The temperature was in the low 90’s with humidity to match. Just another typical summer day in Georgia. I had not cut the bermuda grass since the last weekend and with a week of on again and off again rain had grown up to about 2.5-3 inches.

I just took the mower out of the box, put it and the grass catcher together and with no adjustments started cutting I also decided to go up and down the hill to add additional adventure to the afternoon. I was amazed at how easy it was to push. Even up the hill was not requiring the effort I was expecting. The grass catcher need some additional zip ties to make it work like I wanted, but that was the only thing that slowed me down. My 75 year old Yankee neighbor from across the street saw what was going on and had to come over and check it out. I knew he was just itching to give it a push, but I didn’t offer. There was only so much grass to cut and I wasn’t in a mood to share. I can tell you now that he will be borrowing it shortly. I just know Bob, he will have to give it a try. I give him until this weekend.

Any way the grass looked great. I could not call pushing the Ideal 40 work. I have done work several times in my life, this was not it. It will be even easier to cut the grass the next time. I also noticed that the reel mower did not lift up the bermuda runners and cut them off which is a good thing. Maybe now those couple of small bald spots will fill in. Oh yea, the neighbors will no longer know when it is Sunday afternoon because they will not hear my industrial grade Snapper. I have to ware ear plugs when using it.

Thanks again for answering all my questions over the past couple of weeks.

The Popular Fiskars Momentum Reel Mower: Fiskars Momentum  is adding a Grass Catcher this coming Spring. The 18″ reel mower which revolutionized reel mowing in 2010 will offer this grass catching feature. The Fiskars Momentum

Fiskar Momentum Reel Mower

was the best new mower in the reel mower line up last year.

Fiskars Momentum: The Momentum cuts from 1″ to 4″ and is easily adjustable. Because the wheels are in front and behind the cutting blades, the Momentum cuts right up to the edge, so there is not a cutting gap like most reel mowers. Because of its 18″ blades, the Momentum gets the job done quickly.
